In the 1870s, in a remote village in northern Denmark. Two Lutheran sisters, Martina (played by Birgitte Federspiel) and Philippa (played by Bodil Kjer), live a secluded life, dedicating themselves entirely to their religious duties under the guidance of their father, a pastor, even at the cost of sacrificing love. The kind-hearted sisters take in a woman named Babette (played by Stéphane Audran) who has fled from Paris. With a mysterious background, Babette turns out to be a renowned French chef. Babette is fortunate to win a large lottery prize of 10,000 francs, and to express her gratitude to the kind sisters, she decides to personally prepare an authentic and lavish French dinner for the villagers on the anniversary of their father's death. The film is based on a short story by Danish author Isak Dinesen and won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film at the 60th Academy Awards in 1988. It also received the Catholic Humanitarian Award at the 40th Cannes Film Festival in 1987 and a nomination for Best Foreign Language Film at the 46th Golden Globe Awards in 1989.
