The story takes place in the bustling, vibrant metropolis of Paris, where a country boy arrives to stay with his brother George (played by Thierry Neuvic), but finds himself locked out because he doesn't know the code to his brother's apartment. Just then, George's girlfriend Ann (played by Juliette Binoche) appears and helps the boy enter the apartment. The boy treats the beggar Maria (played by Luminita Gheorghiu) roughly, which earns him harsh criticism from a Black teacher named Amadou (played by Ona Lu Yenke). Later, the police arrive and instead arrest Maria and Amadou. As a result, Maria returns to her hometown in Romania to be with her husband Douglas (played by Bob Nicolescu). Next door to Ann lives an abused child who seeks help from her, leaving Ann unsure of what to do. The scenes depict people, each with their own story.
