The story begins with an unnamed writer (Jude Law) who, to focus on his writing, arrives at a hotel called "The Budapest." Here, the writer meets the owner of the hotel, Monsieur Gustave (F. Murray Abraham), who invites him to dinner and recounts the storied history of the grand hotel. The former owner of the hotel was named Gustav (Ralph Fiennes), and the young Zero (Tony Revolori) was merely a humble bellboy at that time. Gustav was honest and resourceful, and under his management, the Grand Budapest Hotel became the premier vacation destination. Gustav had a romantic relationship with the elderly Madame D (Tilda Swinton), who, after her death, left a priceless painting to Gustav in her will. This angered her son Dmitri (Adrien Brody), marking the beginning of the misfortunes for the Grand Budapest Hotel and Gustav.
