In a future where times are unclear, a girl named Lily drives through the wilderness, seemingly amidst a brutal war between the sexes. To escape a man’s encirclement, Lily abandons her car and ventures deeper into the wild. She crosses a desolate plain and arrives at a strange mansion. The owner is an old woman who can talk to animals, and Lily discovers that she can also understand them. Inside the house, there is a mysterious unicorn. Outside, Lily encounters a pair of incestuous siblings and later joins a group of naked children in planting and playing. As the war draws nearer, everyone engages in a frenzied chase. In the mansion, a large eagle that seems to have flown out of a painting brings fear and mystery to the few people present, ultimately being killed by the siblings with a sword. The old woman eventually dies, and Lily offers her breast to the unicorn. This is a film with obscure meanings and mystical tones, seemingly describing a story occurring in another world. The creative approach of this film derives from surrealism's "automatic writing," much like how Buñuel and Dalí created "Un Chien Andalou." Although Louis Malle regards the creation of this film as a pleasant memory, he finds it difficult to call it his "masterpiece." Similarly, critics find this film hard to categorize and judge, often remaining vague about it, reluctant to engage in deep discussions, and not easily dismissing it.
