In New York in 1953, exterminator Bill (played by Peter Weller) engages in solitary personal writing, known only to two friends who are aware of his literary attempts. Bill's wife Joan (played by Judy Davis) is addicted to injecting insect powder, and Bill visits detox doctor Benway for her, soon being summoned by the narcotics department, where he encounters a talking bug that reveals Bill's true identity as a spy. Panicked, Bill rushes home and accidentally kills his wife, and is forced to seek refuge in the "Interzone" as instructed by the bizarre creature. The local black market butcher, an American writer with a wife resembling Joan, a homosexual businessman, and a woman at the marketplace all appear to be part of a conspiracy. With the help of his talking typewriter "Clark Nova," Bill writes and draws closer to the truth of the conspiracy. After losing Joan once again, Bill discovers the connection between Interzone and Dr. Benway. The film won the Best Actress Award at the 1993 London Film Festival and multiple accolades, including Best Director and Best Cinematography at the 1992 Genie Awards in Canada. It is adapted from the novel of the same name by William S. Burroughs.
