In 1938, the iron hooves of the Japanese army trampled the land of China, while the Wu residence in the southern water town resembled a source of peach blossoms, living a secluded and comfortable life. On the day of Mrs. Wu's (played by Luo Yan) 40th birthday banquet, her friend Mrs. Kang faces a difficult labor, hanging by a thread. Mrs. Wu hurriedly rushes to her friend's side and meets a foreign doctor from the orphanage, Andrew (played by Willem Dafoe). Defying the prejudices of traditional Chinese beliefs, Andrew uses Western techniques to save Mrs. Kang from the grips of death.
