Timbuktu, under the control of religious extremists, suffers daily persecution from jihadists; "half of the land has been occupied by invaders." Women are hit hardest. Through the story of Kidane, Fatima, their daughter Toya and Issan, and their small farm, Abderrahmane Sissako opposes the terrorism of a region "ignored by the media and the world." The director captures the "silent resistance of male and female civilians" in the Sahel region he loves, revealing the reality.
