Set in 1973, it tells the story of Beth, a young woman who leaves her Southern rural home to attend New York University. Her beloved uncle Frank is a respected literature professor, and Beth soon discovers that Frank is gay and lives with his long-term partner Wally, a secret he has kept for many years. After the sudden death of Frank's father/Beth's grandfather, Frank must return home for the funeral and ultimately confront a long-buried trauma that he has been avoiding his entire adult life.
