This film is based on a true story and was nominated for a Teen Choice Award in the United States. In the 1930s in Texas, Black people were stripped of their voting rights and faced segregation and discrimination in employment, justice, military service, and marriage. Mel Tolson (played by Denzel Washington) wants his fellow citizens to take action. He establishes the first debate team at a Black high school.
