In 1989, a brutal civil war broke out in Liberia, West Africa, as the government maintained its power through unfair elections and favored the Krahn ethnic group. Domestic opposition expressed their dissent by hunting down and slaughtering Krahn people, seizing the opportunity to retaliate against the government. The escalating tribal violence triggered a national civil war, forcing peace-loving individuals to flee their homeland. Six missionaries from Monrovia, Liberia could no longer continue their missionary work in their home country and decided to escape to Freetown, the capital of neighboring Sierra Leone.
