In the summer of 1959, the erroneous criticism of Peng Dehuai at the Lushan Conference caused him to endure immense suffering from being wronged for six years. In 1965, disregarding personal gains and losses, he accepted the appointment from Mao Zedong and the Party Central Committee to serve as the deputy commander of the Third Line construction in Chengdu; at that time, newspapers were filled with articles criticizing the newly adapted historical play "Hai Rui Dismisses His Officials," which pointed directly at Peng Dehuai. He suppressed his anger and immediately engaged in the research and investigation of the Third Line construction: he went down mines, into coal pits, visited construction sites, and traveled to rural areas, trekking thousands of miles without complaint; while caring for the destiny of the Party and the country, he also concerned himself with the lives and sufferings of ordinary workers and farmers. With a strong sense of responsibility, a mission, and the broad-mindedness of a true Communist Party member, he proposed strategically significant opinions on the Third Line construction, but some leaders in the Third Line with ulterior motives prevented him from engaging in military industry. He repressed the bitterness in his heart and intensified the pace of his work. He shared meals and labor with the workers, doing the same work as the young soldiers. He was pleased with the achievements made in the Third Line construction; he wept for the martyrs who sacrificed in the Third Line construction; he condemned the blind command that violated objective laws; he was indignant about the corruption and waste of certain individuals; he emphasized at all times and in all places that the Party's purpose is to serve the people. However, Jiang Qing and others did not let up on the persecution of Peng Dehuai. They instructed certain officials of the Third Line Construction Commission to hold meetings, forcing those around Peng to carry out so-called face-to-face "exposures and criticisms" against him, intending to push Comrade Peng Dehuai to his doom. Deeply hurt and angered, Peng disregarded his personal situation and health, and continued to work tenaciously despite his serious illness. His companions were moved to tears, unable to speak. After the outbreak of the Cultural Revolution in 1966, the situation became extremely perilous. Peng ignored the impending catastrophe and went to the coal washing plant in Liupanshui, Guizhou for an inspection. The soldiers, fueled by justice, saluted their Peng Zong, and the resounding voices of "The Song of the Chinese People's Volunteer Army" and "The Internationale" echoed through the mountains. Peng Dehuai solemnly saluted millions of soldiers, as the mountains, the red flags, and the soldiers stood upright under the blue sky, watching him walk away into the distance—With high mountains and sharp blades, one is steadfast when free of desires. Standing on the mountain top, Peng gazed into the distance at the blood-red sunset and said firmly, "Even if I die, I want to shine one last time like this sun." At the end of the film, the credits appear: Comrade Peng Dehuai cultivated the precious qualities of having high aspirations, considering the overall situation, and bearing humiliation through long-term revolutionary struggle. When faced with unfair treatment and in adverse circumstances, he still kept the revolutionary overall situation in mind, consciously adhered to Party discipline, maintained integrity and righteousness, and stood firm in his convictions. His spirit is particularly moving. (Excerpt from Chairman Jiang Zemin's speech at the symposium commemorating the 95th anniversary of Peng Dehuai's birth.)
