"Petrov's Flu" is the latest work by the acclaimed Russian director Kirill Serebrennikov, known for his stunning film "Summer." After being placed under house arrest for supporting a queer stage play, he regained his freedom and unleashed a torrent of creativity. Set against the backdrop of the post-Soviet era, the male lead, suspected to have contracted the flu, is repeatedly delayed on his way home by an eccentric old man and a suicidal writer. Under the influence of aspirin and vodka, his consciousness becomes increasingly blurred, eventually escaping into the comic fantasies of his own creation. The director's signature technique of using the past to comment on the present, along with smooth, dynamic transitions and overlapping dream sequences, draws comparisons to Charlie Kaufman, the award-winning screenwriter of "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind," and anime master Satoshi Kon, making it an exhilarating experience.
