Walter Neff (played by Fred MacMurray) is a successful insurance salesman who returns to his office at night to recount his story on a tape recorder... Neff visits the home of Mr. Dietrichson to secure his insurance business, but finds Mr. Dietrichson is not home. Instead, he meets Mr. Dietrichson's beautiful new wife, Phyllis Dietrichson (played by Barbara Stanwyck). Phyllis makes Neff feel uneasy, and she begins to speak of her husband's many faults. During a second visit, Neff finally succumbs to his desires and agrees to participate in Phyllis's plan to kill her husband. Neff plans to create the illusion that Mr. Dietrichson fell off a train to collect on the “double indemnity” insurance. Everything goes smoothly, Mr. Dietrichson dies, and it seems that both Neff and Phyllis's love and financial security are guaranteed. However, Neff's friend, insurance investigator Barton Keyes (played by Edward G. Robinson), suspects something is amiss and begins to investigate the whole affair... This film is adapted from the 1943 novel of the same name by James M. Cain, co-written by director Billy Wilder and detective novelist Raymond Chandler. It received seven nominations, including Best Picture, at the 17th Academy Awards.
