A smoking ban turns a narrow alley into a new social area, where countless men and women who smoke have to hide to do so. Regardless of their status or purpose, in that space they are just smokers, and what they do is nothing more than sharing smoke and casual banter together. Zhi Ming (played by Shawn Yue), who works in an advertising company, meets Chun Jiao (played by Miriam Yeung), who works at a cosmetics counter, in that alley. Zhi Ming’s unfortunate circumstances and his gesture of lighting a cigarette for Chun Jiao spark a slight affection for this refined man. Over the next few days and nights, they exchange messages and agree to meet at the street corner to smoke. Their feelings are transmitted through their thumbs, love grows amidst the smoke, and eventually, an ambiguous message leads to Chun Jiao breaking up with her boyfriend Jia Hao (played by Anthony Wong). Just when Chun Jiao is ready to fully invest in a relationship with Zhi Ming, his attitude becomes ambiguous. The smoke continues to linger in the alley, but it can’t bridge the gap that has arisen between them. Alongside the decision to increase tobacco taxes, many smokers begin to search for and stockpile cigarettes. In the search for cigarettes, Zhi Ming and Chun Jiao reunite at the convenience store where they first met. That night, they agree to go look for cigarettes together... This film was completed in five weeks with 15 shooting days, making the filming time quite short. Due to the excessive use of coarse and realistic language, "The One I Love" was rated as Category III when it premiered in Hong Kong.
