19-year-old Andrew (Miles Teller) grows up in a single-parent family and aspires to become a top jazz drummer. One night, while practicing at school, he catches the eye of the intense instructor Fletcher (J.K. Simmons), who brings him into the prestigious band, and Andrew starts to pay the price for his pursuit of perfection. The more Andrew practices diligently, the more he becomes isolated from the outside world. The only person who understands him is Fletcher, but Fletcher's volatility and unpredictable mood distort their teacher-student relationship, deeply affecting Andrew and changing his personality. Ultimately, when Andrew finally takes the stage at Carnegie Hall, he horrifyingly realizes that Fletcher has been waiting to bring him down... "Whiplash" tells the passionate story of a young man challenging his limits under the strict tutelage of a master, pursuing his dream of becoming a jazz drummer through unconventional means. The protagonist loves drumming, but his excessive dedication leads him to lose sight of his original love for music, transforming it into a burden of life and resulting in a near-manic confrontation between teacher and student. The film not only portrays the struggles of musicians but also reveals the harsh truths behind traditional inspiration. "Whiplash" won the highest honor of the Jury Prize at the 30th Sundance Film Festival.
