Amy (Brigitte Mira) is a 60-year-old cleaning woman who works hard for a meager salary, living in poverty. By chance, she meets 40-year-old Ali (El Hedi ben Salem), and after they dance together, Ali offers to take Amy home. As night falls, Ali misses the last bus and ends up staying at Amy's house. Two lonely individuals meet and feel a deep connection, sharing candlelight conversations. When Amy feels deep doubts about this situation, Ali offers her calm reassurance. As expected, news of Amy spending the night with a man quickly spreads through the streets, and the gossip from neighbors and colleagues makes her feel uncomfortable. Reluctantly, she fabricates a lie, claiming that Ali is her fiancé. This engagement faces widespread opposition, and everyone tries their best to ostracize and discredit the couple, prompting them to decide to take a trip to avoid the backlash. When they return, their situation improves, not because the neighbors have accepted them, but because they have found new targets for their exclusion. Without external pressure, however, Amy and Ali's relationship begins to crack due to internal conflicts. The film realistically portrays a cold and harsh society, exploring the various forms of discrimination within it and the lonely, grim aspects of human nature.
