The fate of ordinary people is always so small that it can be ignored in the face of a tumultuous era. Individuals, when bravely stepping forward to try to halt the tide of history, resemble Don Quixote charging at windmills, often becoming martyrs, and more often, individuals lack even the right to choose to be bystanders. However, the tragedies of ordinary people undoubtedly reflect the absurdity and cruelty of history. After Japan's unconditional surrender in 1945 and Taiwan's restoration, a Lin family in Keelung thought they were about to live better days, but plans fell short of expectations, and the Lin family faced ongoing hardships. After the "February 28 Incident," the family had only the honest deaf-mute fourth brother, Lin Wenqing (Tony Leung), who ran a photography studio left. Yet the tragedy did not end there, as Lin Wenqing's connections with progressive individuals led to his arrest, leaving only Lin Wenqing and the infant child of Wu Kuanmei (Hsin Shu-Fen) in the Lin family—still in swaddling clothes, babbling and learning to speak.
