American girl Lauren (Diane Lane) moves to France with her mother who has remarried. Lauren's personality is more introverted, and she doesn't have many friends. When she relocates to France, she meets a local boy, Daniel, which changes her life. Because these two young people have fallen in love. An old gentleman named Giusse (Laurence Olivier) tells them a heartfelt legend: if lovers kiss on the Bridge of Sighs at sunset, their love will last forever. With Giusse's help, the two head to Venice's Bridge of Sighs, while Lauren's mother thinks her daughter has been kidnapped.
