The story takes place in 1941, where Hong Kong is shrouded in the shadow of war. The profit-driven businessman Kai Shu (played by Law Kar Ying) has three daughters: Xin Di (played by Yip Yuk Hing), Wang Di (played by Chiu Shuk Ching), and Ai Di (played by Chan Siu Ha). The vicious stepmother dislikes Xin Di and Wang Di because they are not her biological children. Open-minded Wang Di has been in love with the progressive young man Shen Fang (played by Tuō Zōng Huá) next door for many years. When she discovers that her sister Xin Di also has feelings for Shen Fang, she finds herself in a dilemma between family ties and love. On December 25th, Hong Kong falls; the iron hooves of the Japanese army trample every inch of land and every heart of the locals. Society descends into chaos, and food and money become extremely scarce. To protect himself, Kai Shu becomes a traitor, even sending Xin Di into the hands of the Japanese to gain their trust.
