Does the life of Jane Austen (played by Anne Hathaway) mirror the twists and turns of her writing and its fulfilling conclusions? "Becoming Jane" tells her story in a biographical manner: her mother strives to arrange a marriage for her with a wealthy member of the upper class. However, Jane refuses a loveless marriage, believing that women should support themselves through their own abilities. Thus, she rejects the proposal from the noble Mr. Wisley and falls in love with the soul-mate Tom Lefroy (played by James McAvoy). Good things often face obstacles, and interference arises, leading Tom's family to disapprove of their union. Tom decides to elope with Jane. However, this means Tom's financial support would be cut off, and Jane would face societal pressures and a life of poverty. How far will the two go on their path to elopement? Will there be a happy ending?
