Twenty years have passed in the blink of an eye. After traveling far from home, Renton (Ewan McGregor) returns to his roots in Edinburgh. Little does he know, upon his return, he encounters Spud (Ewen Bremner), who is in despair and attempting suicide. It turns out that Spud not only has a failed marriage but has also fallen back into addiction. Encouraged by Renton, Spud decides to write in order to heal his inner wounds. Later, Renton reconnects with his former close friend Sick Boy (Jonny Lee Miller), who punches him due to past grievances, setting a revenge plan in motion. At Sick Boy's invitation, Renton decides to partner with him to open a brothel, and soon after, the design-savvy Spud joins them. Meanwhile, the imprisoned Begbie (Robert Carlyle) successfully escapes from prison and, after learning the truth about past events, decides to hunt down Renton for revenge.
