In Edinburgh, Scotland, three young men—Renton (played by Ewan McGregor), Spud (played by Ewen Bremner), and Sick Boy (played by Jonny Lee Miller)—lead a chaotic and debauched lifestyle filled with drug use, promiscuity, and crime. In the midst of their reckless squandering of youth, drugs become the root of all evil. Renton has a love-hate relationship with them; he tries to quit but ultimately falls back into addiction. After a wild party, one of them unknowingly causes the death of a baby born to a girl named Alison (played by Susan Vidler). This marks the beginning of a true nightmare. Spud is imprisoned for robbery, and Renton is hospitalized after an overdose, later subjected to forced detox. Terrifying hallucinations and deep-seated fears compel him to sever ties with drugs. Although a seemingly bright new life awaits, past friends like Begbie (played by Robert Carlyle) show up, bringing him endless troubles…This film is adapted from the novel of the same name by Irvine Welsh.
