In 1988 Brooklyn, New York, Bobby (Joaquin Phoenix) manages a large club for Russian businessman Boris "Benny" Bakhayeva, while his girlfriend Amanda (Eva Mendes) and he are deeply in love. Both his career and love life are going well, but Bobby feels averse to his family. His father, the New York Police Commissioner, and his brother Joseph (Mark Wahlberg), recently promoted to head the drug squad, create an environment Bobby finds unbearable.
