Josh (played by Max Pomeranc) is an ordinary American boy. One day, he plays chess with his father Fred (played by Joe Mantegna) and miraculously beats his experienced father. After that, Josh participates in a chess tournament, advancing through the rounds and showcasing his amazing talent. His parents decide to cultivate Josh into a chess prodigy. One day, a man named Vinnie (played by Laurence Fishburne) appears beside Josh, and over time, they form a deep friendship. Meanwhile, Josh's parents seek the guidance of the esteemed Go teacher Bruce (played by Ben Kingsley) to mentor Josh. However, it isn't long before Josh grows weary of the monotonous routine of sitting in front of the chessboard day after day.
