Doug (David Tennant) and his wife Abi (Rosamund Pike) take their three children on a road trip to the distant Scottish Highlands to celebrate Doug's father Gordy’s (Billy Connolly) birthday. Their eldest daughter is a meticulous girl who always records important matters in her diary, the younger brother is a book lover, and the little girl carries her two large stones everywhere, talking to them as if they were her friends. The old man lives with Doug's siblings, and the hidden conflicts in that household are not to be underestimated. The father knows that his illness will soon be terminal; he is already tired of the family's arguments and does not want to participate in the birthday party prepared for him. The adults are busy with the tense preparations for the father’s birthday. Unexpectedly, on the birthday itself, despite the family's objections, the father insists on taking the three children to the seaside for some fun. What follows not only leaves the adults, who are immersed in the cheerful atmosphere of the birthday party, in disbelief but also abruptly pulls you from the comedic storyline into the harsh reality of death.
