The story is based on the life of Mrs. Wallis Simpson, and it is Madonna's second film directed after "Filth and Wisdom" in 2008. The production costs were mostly covered out of her own pocket, totaling $36 million. The film uses a dual narrative structure: one line tells the legendary romance between King Edward VIII (James D'Arcy) and American woman Wallis Simpson (Andrea Riseborough). "For love, not for the kingdom," Edward names his love but in doing so, he burdens Wallis with all the reproach of his choices. The other line is set in 1998, where New Yorker Wally Winthrop (Abbie Cornish) becomes obsessed with the love story of Wallis and Edward while facing her husband's emotional abuse. She collects everything about Wallis and visits the exhibition of Wallis's artifacts auction repeatedly. During one of her many visits to the exhibition, she encounters a security guard (Oscar Isaac), reigniting passions she hasn't felt in a long time.
