In June 1944, as World War II approached its end, the island of Saipan in the South Pacific faced its most brutal moment. A 70,000-strong American army landed on the small island, overwhelming the Japanese defenses. With defeat inevitable, Japanese officers ordered all military personnel and civilians on the island to "fight to the death" in loyalty to the Emperor, turning the beautiful Saipan into a hell on earth filled with bloodshed. Captain Hideo Oba (played by Yuya Tegoshi) of the 18th Infantry Regiment led 2,000 soldiers in a suicide attack against the American forces, resulting in a brutal melee that left both sides devastated. Oba miraculously survived and encountered other remnants of his unit, including Imashita Masamitsu (played by Toshiro Yanagiba) and Kitani Toshio (played by Takayuki Yamada). At this moment, the belief in "survival" filled Oba's heart, and he decided to protect the surviving military personnel and civilians until the war's end... This film is adapted from Don Jones's full-length documentary novel "Oba, the Last Samurai: Saipan 1944-45," based on true historical events during the Battle of Saipan in World War II.
