Childhood playmates have turned into unscrupulous merchants colluding with government and bandits. Zatoichi returns home but finds no warmth from people, ultimately having to continue wielding his sword and walk away into the sunset. The grand fusion of Zatoichi series elements remains impressive. The final battle at the rice warehouse effectively utilizes the sound effect of rice pouring and its environment, with standout cinematography; the bloody scenes of severed hands and feet are the most gruesome in the series. Zatoichi's emotional scenes with his foster mother and companions are the most touching.
