In 1926, in a cotton field in Georgia, a young Cecil witnessed the murder of his father by the plantation owner, which cast a lifelong shadow of racism in his heart. By the late 1950s, Cecil Gaines (played by Forest Whitaker), lingering in Washington, unexpectedly gained the favor of the White House chief of staff and was appointed to work in food service at the center of national politics. He heeded his boss’s teachings, read the room, and blended into the background. In the years that followed, Cecil served presidents who made significant marks in American history, including Eisenhower (played by Robin Williams), Kennedy (played by James Marsden), Johnson (played by Liev Schreiber), Nixon (played by John Cusack), and Reagan (played by Alan Rickman). Amid the struggle for civil rights for African Americans, he and the presidents, family, and compatriots experienced many unforgettable moments... This film is based on the true story of Eugene Allen, the White House chief butler.
