The gangster boss Ah Kuan (played by Tony Leung Ka-fai) is successful in his career, but his family is a mess: his son Sid (played by Jaycee Chan) is a rebellious rock youth who is eager to inherit his father's business; his daughter Sina (played by Josie Ho) is a pet doctor who is in a relationship with her colleague Michael, living a life that is completely disconnected from her father's values. Sid, due to a dispute over the woman Carmen (played by Cheng Hsi-yi) of another gang leader, Brother Ma (played by Cheng Kwan), has to escape to a remote mountainous area in Taiwan, accompanied by Ah Kuan's capable assistant, Ah Zhao (played by Cheung Yau-cheung). In Taiwan, Sid joins a drumming group known as the Zen Drum Mountain People and changes his name to Ah Dao, where he meets a girl from the drumming team, Red Bean (played by Kwan Liting). He finds peace of mind in their simple life; Ah Zhao attends classes at a community school and discovers his life goals. Back in Hong Kong, because of Sid's flight, Ah Kuan's business is affected, but this also leads to a reconciliation with his daughter Sina, as he accepts her life and relationship. Meanwhile, the Zen Drum Mountain People's world tour kicks off, with Hong Kong as the first stop. As Sid and his father Ah Kuan gradually get to know each other and begin to thaw their icy relationship, Ah Kuan is assassinated in prison. Sid's simple life is shattered, and he faces the gang's business and the feud with Brother Ma. How will he confront all of this?
