In the late Qing Dynasty, just over twenty years old, "I" (played by Shi Hui) became unemployed. Thanks to the help of my neighbor, Patrolman Zhao, I also became a patrolman, which people commonly call "臭脚巡" (stinky foot patrol). From this nickname, you can tell that this job is not easy. Moreover, during those chaotic years of war and famine, the people lived in hardship, with the Qing government, warlords, foreigners, patriotic youths, and the Kuomintang all taking their turns to create turmoil in old Beijing. I once worked at Mr. Qin's mansion and truly witnessed the extravagance and corruption of the officials. During the May Fourth Movement, I also got to know student leader Shen Yuan, who tirelessly worked for the rise of the new China. As for me, a little commoner at the bottom of society, I just hoped to live a few days of stable life with my wife and children. But in this unfortunate era, how could common people have a stable life? This film is adapted from Lao She's novel of the same name.
