This lavish costume drama is set against the historical backdrop of the spring of 1866, on the eve of the conflict between Italy and Austria. It tells the story of an Italian noblewoman, Countess Serpieri, who betrays her marriage and country, falling passionately in love with the handsome yet capricious Austrian officer, Lieutenant Franz Mahler. Their love is intense, but the times are changing drastically, ultimately leading to tragedy.
