On the Greek island of Cephalonia, pure and peaceful, as if it were a paradise on earth. The islanders have lived here for generations, peaceful and uncontentious. However, the flames of World War II soon shattered this tranquility. Captain Antonio Corelli (played by Nicolas Cage) leads soldiers to the small island, maintaining a hostile distance between both sides. The only companion with Corelli is a mandolin to ease his solitude. By chance, Corelli encounters the local girl Pelagia (played by Penélope Cruz). The two initially clash in their interactions, but Pelagia's graceful demeanor and strong character quickly touch Corelli's heart, while Corelli's heavenly music captivates Pelagia. However, beautiful moments are always brief, and as the war draws near, the two lovers must make a final choice. This deeply moving love story set against the backdrop of World War II, "Captain Corelli's Mandolin," is based on the bestselling novel by British author Louis de Bernières. The female lead, Penélope Cruz, was nominated for the "Audience - Best Actress" at the 14th European Film Awards in 2001 for her role in this film.
