Rural youth Dongzi (Shi Yu) arrives in Wuhan alone to change his destiny and seeks refuge with his fellow townsman Gao Ping (Guo Tao), becoming a porter known as "the burden" by the people of Wuhan, earning barely enough to get by. Gao Ping, in pursuit of quick money, engages in extortion with others, but is injured by his accomplices midway.
