A masterpiece by Kurosawa, produced between the end of the war and post-war, which was censored by the occupying forces and premiered for the first time in 1952 after the peace treaty was signed. Based on the Noh play "Ataka" and its Kabuki adaptation "Kanjincho", it depicts the crossing of the "Ataka barrier" by Yoshitsune and Benkei's group after the arrest warrant was issued by Minamoto no Yoritomo. Kurosawa creates a talkative strongman (Gouriki) accompanying the seven members of Yoshitsune's entourage, fully utilizing Enoken's character. The contrast between Okouchi Denjiro's Benkei and Enoken's strongman produces striking effects, making this film extraordinary. Enoken's light-heartedness accentuates the tragic nature of those on the brink of destruction. The ending features Benkei's intoxicated expression and the tears of the strongman left alone upon awakening, creating a poem-rich piece.
