On August 31, 1937, during the Battle of Shanghai, Yao Ziqing was ordered to lead over 500 men to defend the city of Baoshan. The Japanese army launched a frenzied attack on Baoshan through coordinated land, sea, and air assaults to expand their landing area. Facing outdated equipment, unfavorable terrain, and no reinforcements, the intelligent and brave Yao Ziqing led his entire battalion to defend the isolated city against overwhelming odds.
