In 1928 Los Angeles, Christine Collins (played by Angelina Jolie) works at a telephone exchange and raises her son Walter (played by Gattlin Griffith) alone. Their life is simple and happy. However, their lives are soon disrupted when Christine finds her son missing after work one day. Under public pressure, the corrupt Los Angeles police return Walter after five months, but Christine realizes that this boy is not her biological son. She repeatedly asks the police to clarify the situation and help her find the real Walter, but she faces obstruction and blame, even being sent to a mental institution on charges of interfering with police duties.
