The second installment continues the style of the first while showcasing a multi-threaded narrative, resulting in a more engaging plot. At the end of the first film, Boromir is killed by the Uruk-hai, and the two hobbits, Pippin and Merry, are captured. Aragorn, the elf Legolas (played by Orlando Bloom), and the dwarf Gimli pursue the Uruk-hai to rescue Pippin and Merry and encounter the "resurrected" wizard Gandalf (played by Ian McKellen). At this time, the treacherous wizard Saruman has taken control of the kingdom of Rohan through its king and is sending out hordes of Uruk-hai to eliminate humanity. Under Gandalf’s leadership, Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli help Rohan resist the invasion of evil forces. Fortunately, Pippin and Merry are rescued by tree folk who can speak and meet the "resurrected" Gandalf. Under Gandalf’s guidance, the tree folk ensure their safety and take them to the Entmoot, where the Ents discuss their stance on the war in Middle-earth: Should they remain neutral and submissive, or rise up in rebellion? With great responsibilities, Frodo (played by Elijah Wood) and Sam continue their journey towards Mount Doom, while being stalked by Gollum. Frodo, using the power of the One Ring, becomes Gollum's master. Guided by Gollum, they reach the entrance of Mount Doom, the Black Gate. Just as they are about to enter, Boromir's brother Faramir appears and takes them back to Gondor. Frodo faces a new crisis as Faramir intends to use the power of the One Ring to counter Saruman's attack...
