Geno (played by Alain Delon), sentenced to twelve years in prison for robbery, is released after serving his time. With the enthusiastic help and guiding of social worker Germain (Jean Gabin), he resolves to turn over a new leaf and become a better person. However, Sheriff Jetler (Michel Bouquet), who believes that "a criminal is always a criminal," does not trust him and constantly opposes him, ultimately driving him to desperation before he loses control and kills Sheriff Jetler. Following a harsh and dogmatic courtroom trial, Geno is ultimately sent to the guillotine. This film presents a strong denunciation and condemnation of despotic tyranny and the guillotine. Its profound themes and scenes often lead the audience into great emotional turmoil. When it was screened in Paris and its suburbs, the audience numbers reached as high as 480,000 in just ten weeks. In 1981, after President Mitterrand took office, a new decree was passed to abolish the death penalty in France.
