An epic religious adventure film directed by Roland Joffé, the two male protagonists are somewhat archetypal, and the content is a bit sprawling, but the visuals are spectacular, with certain scenes beautifully filmed to the point of breathlessness. The performances between Jeremy Irons and Robert De Niro are also noteworthy. The plot describes the 18th century, when Spanish priest Gabriel is sent to the South American jungle to establish a church for the Guaraní people. He encounters the slave trader Rodrigo and takes this man, who is deeply remorseful for having killed his brother, to the destination to seek redemption. When their missionary efforts begin to take shape, conflict arises as the Portuguese and Spanish governments engage in a war over colonial disputes, leading to a tragic conclusion.
