The film is based on a true story, where Dr. James Murray (played by Mel Gibson) leads a committee to edit a new version of the Oxford English Dictionary. Given the technological and human resources of the time, it would take a century to complete the dictionary. Dr. James Murray innovatively adopted a crowdsourcing approach, allowing all English speakers across Britain to contribute definitions by sending them via mail to the editing team. During the collection of definitions, they discovered that a doctor named W.C. Minor (played by Sean Penn) had independently contributed over ten thousand quotations, a task that would be daunting even for a professional linguist. When the committee decided to honor him, an astonishing fact emerged: Dr. Minor was a military surgeon during the American Civil War who had been imprisoned for murder due to schizophrenia, and he was regarded as a madman. A professor and a madman, the earliest English dictionary in human history was thus born from the hands of two vastly different individuals.
