The beautiful and kind yet slightly quirky Sayoko (played by Michiko Ichikawa) lives alone in an old house in the suburbs with a group of lovely cats. She seems to have a natural charm that attracts cats, and she cares for these adorable little creatures just like her grandmother, who passed away two years ago. Carefree Sayoko spends her days placing the cats in a small cart and walking along the riverside while singing her unique "rental cat" call. Along the way, she encounters various characters, including the wealthy yet lonely elderly woman Yoshiko Yoshioka (played by Reiko Kusamura), the middle-aged man Goro Yoshida (played by Ken Mitsuishi) who has been posted to Tokyo for six years, the branch manager of a rental company, Yoshikawa (played by Maho Yamada), and her old classmate Shigeru Yoshizawa (played by Kei Tanaka), who is involved in the underworld.
