In late 19th century Edinburgh, on an extremely cold winter day, a suffering pregnant woman seeks out Dr. Madeleine, known as the witch (voiced by Marie Vincent). Soon after, a frail baby enters the world, but the little guy’s heart is frozen, so Madeleine helps him by installing a mechanical heart. The child's biological mother disappears without a word, and Madeleine raises him as her own son, naming him Jack (voiced by Mathias Malzieu). She warns Jack never to get angry, to avoid intense emotions, especially falling in love. Young Jack grows up, and on his tenth birthday, he visits the town for the first time and encounters the angel of his destiny. His mechanical heart malfunctions, emitting thick smoke, and he realizes he is in love.
