A love affair leads to tragic consequences for two generations. Nonomiya Kiko (played by Hiromi Nagasaku) is unable to possess her lover's heart and body and is forced to abort her child. On a day of pouring rain, despairing Kiko enters her lover's home and takes away their baby daughter, Erina. In the years that follow, she travels from place to place with her “daughter,” Kaoru, all in search of a peaceful place for the “mother and daughter” to live. As time passes, the grown-up Erina (played by Mao Inoue) experiences various challenges in life, seemingly following the same path as her “mother” Kiko. Despite her reluctance to look back, she is still guided by fate to reminisce about the brief but beautiful time shared with Kiko... This film is adapted from the novel of the same name by Mitsuyo Kakuta and won the 5th place in the 2011 Kinema Junpo Top 10, along with Best Actress (Hiromi Nagasaku) and Best Supporting Actress (Eiko Koike) awards; it also won the Best Film and Best Actress awards at the 36th Hochi Film Award.
