Nick, played by Josh Hutcherson, is an inexperienced college student who, while traveling to Colombia to surf with his brother, falls in love with a local girl named Maria. Maria is the niece of drug lord Pablo Escobar, and Nick thus enters Escobar's drug network, becoming one of his trusted associates. As the government begins a large-scale investigation and crackdown on drug trafficking organizations, Escobar's suspicions grow, and Nick's situation becomes increasingly precarious...Benicio del Toro plays drug lord Pablo Escobar in the film, a real historical figure. He was the notorious "King of Cocaine" in Colombia and died during a police chase in 1993.
