The South Boston Irish mafia is rampant, with the largest gang being the Irish mob led by Frank (played by Jack Nicholson). The police decide to send police academy graduate Billy (played by Leonardo DiCaprio) undercover to infiltrate them. Billy, who has experienced a low-level life, is unhappy with the officers' cold sarcasm; he once hoped to be a legitimate cop, but under pressure, he has to obey orders. After going through the baptism of violence and crime, he earns Frank's trust. Meanwhile, fellow graduate Colin (played by Matt Damon) is rewarded for his success in drug enforcement and is planning a wedding with his girlfriend. In reality, he is a pawn planted in the police force by Frank, and the two conspire for personal gain. Both the police and the gang discover the existence of a mole, triggering a cat-and-mouse game... The film won the Best Picture at the 79th Academy Awards, with Martin Scorsese winning Best Director.
