In an unfortunate incident, Sarah (played by Jodie Foster) is raped in a bar, and the men who witness it not only fail to intervene but join in with glee. After the traumatic event leaves her deeply scarred, Sarah takes these despicable men to court, only to find that public opinion turns against her, criticizing her for being promiscuous and morally reprehensible. Katherine (played by Kelly McGillis), the prosecutor defending Sarah, has a deeper understanding and sympathy for Sarah's unfortunate plight as a woman. The verdict is announced: the men who committed the crime are sentenced to only nine months in prison. The law, meant to punish and protect the innocent, instead becomes a shield for the criminals. Angered, Katherine cannot sit idly by. Through the relentless efforts of Katherine and Sarah, the wrongdoers finally receive the punishment they deserve. The two women restore their courage and dignity as women through their actions.
