Burton is a lawyer who has been commissioned to serve as a legal aid attorney for a murder case involving an Aboriginal. He vaguely senses that there is something strange about this death case, but just like the incessant rain, he cannot see the state of affairs clearly. In the director's imagery, the Aboriginal represents primitive mysticism, and the tribe seems to be as unknowable to urban modernization as the descriptions of Aborigines in a book: ancient and unfamiliar. The tribal culture is seen by colonial Europeans as an inaccessible primitivism; they have their own ways of dealing with problems and their own rules of punishment, which form an independent system echoing ancient traditions. However, the white man's system represents European civilization, and this sense of superiority leads them to view Aborigines as ignorant and foolish. Europeans wish to educate them, but this ultimately results in more opposition, and their inability to communicate stems from differing historical and cultural backgrounds. While Burton deals with this case, an Aboriginal named Chris, who appears in his dreams, also shows up in reality. Is it a premonition or something mysterious? Burton's judgment becomes lost. To understand the Aboriginal culture, he invites Chris to his home for dinner. Chris brings a shaman, Charlie, who tells Burton that his prospects are grim, casting Burton into a daze filled with doubt. Nightmares persist, and some objects related to his dreams appear in reality. Believing himself to be a civilized man, he yearns to overcome Charlie’s sorcery.
