This film is Hou Hsiao-hsien's summary of his cinematic career. The ways the male (Zhang Zhen) and female (Shu Qi) protagonists express their emotions and the historical backgrounds of the three stories can all be found in Hou Hsiao-hsien's films across different periods. "Dream of Love" is pure, like a distant shore of an unreachable dream; "Dream of Freedom" is touching, yet it is a dream that is even further from paradise; "Dream of Youth" is cold, yet it reflects reality.
