This film is Hou Hsiao-hsien's summary of his cinematic career. The ways the male (Zhang Zhen) and female (Shu Qi) protagonists express their emotions and the historical backgrounds of the three stories can all be found in Hou Hsiao-hsien's films across different periods. "Dream of Love" is pure, like a distant shore of an unreachable dream; "Dream of Freedom" is touching, yet it is a dream that is even further from paradise; "Dream of Youth" is cold, yet it reflects reality. It is not very meaningful to carelessly assert which segment Hou Hsiao-hsien sees as the "best time (or the best cinematic time)" because all times are wasted and neglected; only after neglecting and wasting can one pull a segment from memory, dust it off, and lament that it was the best time.
