15-year-old boy Michael Berg (played by David Kross) has a chance encounter with a 36-year-old mysterious train ticket seller, Hanna (played by Kate Winslet), and they develop a secret romantic relationship. Hanna loves lying in Michael’s arms listening to him read to her, always immersed in the sound of his reading. While young Michael is deeply enmeshed in this relationship, he realizes he knows nothing about Hanna. Suddenly one day, this mysterious woman disappears without a word, and after a brief period of confusion and sadness, Michael begins a new life. The Second World War may have ended, but Germany's trials for Nazi war criminals continue. As an intern at a law school, Michael unexpectedly recognizes a familiar figure while attending the trial of a Nazi war criminal.
